Now Hiring: Executive Director

Northwoods Volunteer Connection (NVC) was started in 2014 with a mission to provide needed volunteer trail stewardship for the Superior National Forest by engaging volunteers and partner organizations in shared recreation and wilderness projects. NVC serves as a partner to the Forest by helping to increase the capacity of the Forest Service to clear trails, keep campsites clean and maintain access through volunteerism and partnerships. The Forest relies on community-based volunteerism to maintain miles of trails and so many undeveloped camp sites and access points.

Start Date: On or Before January 2, 2024

Title: NVC Executive Director

Status: Permanent PT, 20-25 hours per week, 1040 hours per year

Position Location: "Arrowhead" region of Minnesota, or Cook, Lake or St. Louis Counties

*Reliable Wi-Fi service and personal vehicle required

Salary: $25 per hour

 

Benefits:

  • Field per diem when in the field

  • Travel reimbursement for work-related personal vehicle use paid at the current federal rate

  • 5 days of PTO per year (may be used as sick days), accruing monthly; paid at the PT rate

  • 5 federal holiday days per year paid at PT rate

  • Cell phone reimbursement

POSITION SUMMARY

The role of the Executive Director is to oversee day to day and long-term management of NVC, provide financial management, lead fundraising in collaboration with the NVC Board, hire and supervise seasonal staff and manage NVC communications. The Executive Director is responsible for maintaining a collaborative, high functioning relationship with the Superior National Forest and working closely with other community partners. This position may require periodic travel and reports to the Board Chair of the Board of Directors.

The ED is an hourly paid and non-exempt position. Some travel and weekend availability is required. Use of a personal vehicle will be necessary and mileage reimbursement will be provided at the government rate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and JOB DUTIES

Financial Management and Development 50% of time

Financial Oversight:

  • Develop an annual budget for board review and update as needed throughout the year based on grant income and unforeseen expenses

Grants Management:

  • Research, write and submit grants to secure funding for NVC programs, projects and administrative costs.

Fundraising:

  • Oversee existing fundraising activities, develop new projects and work with the NVC board to accomplish this.

Program Management 35% of time

  • Manage Volunteer Recruitment and Retention and Project Oversight.

Community Relationships and Board Support 15% of time

  • Manage Website, Newsletters, Social Media and Community Relationships. Work closely with NVC board members to meet mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications may be met by any combination of education and experience that provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed in the job description.

The ideal Executive Director candidate will possess the following:

  • Degree in recreation, natural resource management, outdoor education or related field.

  • Strong financial management skills.

  • Knowledge and experience with program management and volunteer stewardship work, like the work of Northwoods Volunteer Connection.

  • Understanding of Northwoods Volunteer Connection mission, vision, goals and objectives.

  • Experience in nonprofit operations, working with a government agency and outdoor program management.

  • Fundraising experience, grant writing, research and management experience.

  • Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel, QuickBooks or similar accounting software, website and social media.

  • Experience with database applications a plus.

  • Experience in volunteer and staff management.

  • Knowledge of the Superior National Forest and its volunteer stewardship programs highly desired.
